News Network: Stockton
Stockton is at risk of becoming the biggest
city in the nation to go into bankruptcy. The city is the
first California municipality required to go through mediation with its creditors under the restraints
of a new law designed to protect labor unions. But it
appears mediation has failed and the Stockton City Council will
have no choice but to adopt the pendency plan. Stockton
Record Reporter Scott Smith joins us with more details on the
city's predicament.
Foster Youth After Graduation Many young
adults living in foster homes have just graduated from high school,
and with the help of a relatively new law in California those young
adults can remain with their foster families for a few extra years.
The problem, though, is that there aren't enough foster
families to care for these young adults, even if the law requires
it. For the next month, a group of local agencies, including
the ones in Placer and Nevada Counties, will be trying to fix the
problem in this area by recruiting as many adults as possible to
become foster parents. Their initiative is called "Today's Foster Parent," and joining us to
discuss the importance of foster families is a woman who has cared
for more than 20 foster children over the past eight years, Susan
Flanagan from Lincoln. Gail Johnson Vaughan also joins the
discussion. She's the Executive Director of Mission Focused
Solutions, a Grass Valley-based foster care advocacy organization
that is spearheading the campaign to recruit foster parents.
