Insight: Qualifying for Tax-Exempt Status / Mead Kibbey / Alternative Education: Community Schools / James Cavern

Qualifying for Tax-Exempt Status In light of the recent IRS scandal - conservative groups with the words Tea Party or Patriot were being singled out for extra scrutiny by the Ohio office - and Lois Lerner pleading the fifth, we want to know what actually qualifies an organization for tax-exempt status and what is the difference between 501(c)3s, 501(c)4s and 527s. Rosemary Fei, a partner at Adler & Colvin in San Francisco, which focuses exclusively on representing nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations and their funders to comply with the requirements of their tax-exempt status, joins us to talk about the issues surrounding the different statuses.

Alternative Education: Community Schools In the next installment of our series on alternative education styles we're adding a slight twist. Community Schools take an alternative way of looking at the role of a school. These schools are like all-in-one, community resource centers for students and families in lower socioeconomic areas. Harmon Johnson Elementary School in North Sacramento is a great example of not only a community school, but one that's thriving. This school has had the highest 3-year growth on California's Academic Performance Index and one of the highest attendance rates of any school in the Twin Rivers Unified School District. The school will also be receiving a 2013 Community Schools Award for Excellence in Washington, DC June 6. And, impressive as that may be, Harmon Johnson accomplished all this with 98 percent of its students in poverty and 70 percent being English Language Learners.
