Joe Barr

Chief Content Officer

As Chief Content Officer, Joe Barr is CapRadio’s strategic leader for content creation and distribution on all station platforms, including CapRadio News, CapRadio Music and Capradio.org.

Barr led the major expansion the station's News Department, including creation of Health Care, Environment and Food & Sustainability beats. He developed CapRadio's statewide news service, Capital Public Radio Network (CPRN) which reaches about three-million listeners a week on more about 50 public radio stations in California, Oregon and Nevada. Barr led the News Department to numerous awards, including a national Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting and Gabriel and Sigma Delta Chi awards for Best Documentary.

He developed CapRadio’s award-winning, nationally distributed community engagement documentary series, The View From Here and PolitiFact California, the first-ever public radio partnership with the Pulitzer Prize winning fact checking organization.  He's a senior fellow in the American Leadership Forum and serves as a member of its board of directors. He has been named to Capitol Weekly's annual Top 100 List of influencers in Sacramento.

Prior to joining Capital Public Radio, Barr was a Senior Producer for the news division of the Westwood One radio network. He managed coverage used by more than a thousand commercial radio stations in the U.S. Before that, he was an award-winning reporter/anchor at NPR member station KJZZ in Phoenix. He began his career after college at commercial radio news stations in Pennsylvania, which is his home state.

Barr lives in Sacramento with his wife, Nicole. They enjoy regular bike rides, hiking and traveling.
