The Sacramento streetcar project has cleared a potential roadblock. Tuesday night, landowners of properties along the proposed streetcar line agreed to a tax increase to help pay for the project.
Though not legally required to do so, the Sacramento City Council asked property owners to approve a tax on 1068 parcels.
The city's finance department says about two-thirds of the ballots that were returned were in favor of the tax.
Next week, the Sacramento City Council is expected to ask about 3800 people who live in the area of the proposed streetcar line to vote on the project.
Sacramento County will conduct the election.
Sheri Smith with the finance department says the City is required to ask people who live in the area to vote.
"Ballots will be due back June 2nd," Smith says.
The city says the tax will raise about $30 million of the $150 million project cost.
The streetcar would connect West Sacramento and Midtown Sacramento.
