Thinning of trees to reduce fire danger is underway on about 340 acres of National Forest System lands on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.
The Forest Service said a thinning operation has started in an area on the east side of Highway 267, north of Speckled Avenue, above Kings Beach. The area will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through October 15 due to heavy equipment operations and falling trees.
The Forest Service said people disregarding the closure may face fines and jail time.
The work is part of a 3,300-acre thinning project, Carnelian Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.
The goal is to reduce the risk of severe wildfire, improve forest health, and provide defensible space to nearby communities.
