Sacramento State Finds More Parking For Students

The first two weeks of the Fall semester at Sacramento State are usually the worst for traffic and parking. 

That's because most students come every day to make sure they don't get dropped from classes or because they want to add classes. 

With a record Fall enrollment of 30,023 students, along with 2,850 faculty and staff, finding a spot means getting to campus early. 

"The first two weeks of classes are always a challenge with new students coming and with all students coming so they don't get dropped from their classes," says Tony Lucas, Director of University Transportation and Parking Services at Sac State. 

He says two campus projects have taken away about 500 spaces since last year. But a new parking area has been added to ease the crunch. 

"We've increased enrollment which is why the University made the decision to open the Ramona property up and add those additional 350-400 spaces to our inventory," says Lucas. 

He says students can take a free shuttle from the off-campus Ramona parking lot. 

There are roughly 14,000 parking spaces on campus, about 2,000 of those spots are reserved for faculty and staff.

While the first two weeks can be hectic for parking, Lucas says it eventually settles down. 

"It tends to drop off after two weeks and you get more of a normal pattern," says Lucas. "And there we find that we typically have plenty of parking on campus."
