Sacramento Fresh Food Drive Tries For World Record

Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork program launches a food drive starting at 5 a.m. Wednesday on Capitol Mall.

The primary goal of the drive is to collect enough food to make sure fresh, local produce from the Sacramento region’s farms reach "every fork in the community." 

But Farm-to-Fork Program Director Nicole Rogers says there is another goal. 

"We need to collect at least 25,000 pounds of fresh produce, so that's just fruits and vegetables only," says Rogers. 

Rogers says that's the total needed to set a record for the world's largest fresh food donation. 

"I want to say that we're absolutely going to crush this goal," says Rogers. "And that we're going to see our community rally and we're going to do great things." 

She says a representative from Guinness World Records will be on-site as the food is weighed. 

Rogers says the fresh produce will first go to a cold storage facility operated by Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services before it's distributed within a day after the collection.
