Farm To Fork Event Sets Food Donation Record

Sacramento's Farm To Fork event organizers say they have broken the record for the most fresh food collected at one time.

The record was 25,000 pounds. The new record is more than 170,830 pounds.

Sidney Scheideman is with the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau. She says farmers, grocery stores, and people who live in the greater Sacramento area donated the food.

"Every year for the Farm to Fork Celebration, we try to kick it off with a bang. The first year we had cattle running down Capitol Mall. The second year, we had a parade of tractors. This year we just thought how can we give back but do it in a really cool, fun, exciting way where even the community come be a part of this."

Most of the food was collected this morning and trucked to the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services' cold storage facility.

Scheideman says the fruits and vegetables will be distributed to 150,000 people through 210 partner agencies.

"The Sacramento Food Bank and Family Service's cold storage is the only place in the country that has something this large for storage. And, that's why our food bank and our region is just so fortunate to have something like this to serve the underserved fresh local produce."

Some of the food was trucked in by Juan Osuna from the Second Harvest Food Bank in Manteca.

"It's a good thing man. There's a lot of people that are in need of food and we just try to service the people."

A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to certify the record.

The Food Bank serves food to 150,000 people every month.

Food came from as far away as Manteca and the Oregon border.
