The California Air Resources Board voted unanimously in favor of the rules to cut transportation fuel emissions 10 percent by 2020. They've been in effect since 2009, but the Board made changes to streamline the process for alternative fuel producers.
"We have seen compliance and in fact over-compliance with the early stages of this rule, there are credits in the bank, we’ve seen that the low-carbon fuel standard is spawning clean and safer fuels in California,” says Mary Nichols, chair of the California Air Resources Board.
Air Resources Board member John Gioia also called the program a success.
“I think there is a quadruple win here, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, improving public health and improving the resiliency of our economy,” says Gioia.
But Tiffany Roberts with the Western States Petroleum Association says there aren’t enough alternative fuels in the quantity they would need to comply with the regulation.
“A fundamental flaw of the program is that it regulates fuel suppliers who only have limited control over all fuels,” says Roberts.
The Air Resrouces Board says right now its seeing more clean fuel coming on the market than required.
