California Leads The Nation In Organic Sales

You've probably noticed that organic options are increasing at your local grocery store. That's because the demand is growing. Sales of organic products are up 72 percent since 2008 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. California is leading the nation at $2.2 billion in sales.

In addition to strong current numbers, the USDA says the future also looks promising. About 40 percent of the country's organic growers say they intend to increase production over the next five years, and nearly 700 farmers says they're making the transition from conventional to organic growing.

Last year the selection of products was larger and more diverse than ever. Milk and eggs were the top organic commodities followed by chicken and lettuce.

There's a good chance that if you're buying organic you're also buying local. The point of sale for 80 percent of the nation's organic products last year was less than 500 miles from the farm.
