The U.S. Forest Service says prescribed fires are used as a way to reduce fuels that could feed future wildfires.
Federal, state and local fire agencies (Tahoe Fires and Fuels Team) have been conducting the burns around Lake Tahoe since October 2015.
On the east shore of Lake Tahoe, operations are planned this week near the Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, south of Glenbrook and between Round Hill and Zephyr Cove.
South shore operations could include Spring Creek, Panther Road and Mountain Drive near North Upper Truckee Road.
Where and when to start a burn depends on weather, including conditions that allow the smoke to carry up and out of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Forest Service says smoke from prescribed fire operations is normal and may continue for several days.
Each prescribed fire operation follows a burn plan, which considers temperature, humidity, wind, moisture of the vegetation, and conditions for the dispersal of smoke.
