The U.S. Forest Service says prescribed fires are used as a way to reduce fuels that could feed future wildfires.
Federal, state and local fire agencies have been conducting the burns around Lake Tahoe since last October.
Burns are planned:
On the South Shore of Lake Tahoe northeast of the Lake Tahoe Airport near Barbara Avenue; off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road; off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain; and, off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.
When and where to start a burn depends on weather, including conditions that allow the smoke to carry up and out of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Forest Service says smoke from prescribed fire operations is normal and may continue for several days.
