Original Post: (AP) - Firefighters in Southern California have made their biggest gains yet against the powerful Blue Cut Fire that has raged out of control for much of the week.

San Bernardino County fire officials say the fire is 22 percent contained Friday morning, up from 4 percent Thursday. Some evacuees were allowed to return home. The fire that broke out Tuesday in the Cajon Pass near Interstate 15 east of Los Angeles has now burned 56 square miles. Many homes have burned, but officials say there are still no specific figures on how many.

The Blue Cut Fire is 35,969 acres.

Meanwhile, crews battling the Clayton Fire, which has destroyed hundreds of structures in Lake County, continue to make progress. The blaze is now 65 percent contained and is currently 3,929 acres.

Crews are also still battling the Soberanes Fire near Big Sur. Some evacuation orders and warnings remain. The blaze is 81,396 acres and is 60 percent contained. It's expected to keep burning until the end of August.
