The Salvation Army is accepting applications from Sacramento families for a free holiday dinner. Martin Ross is with the Salvation Army. Ross says the economy may be improving for some but other people need help.
"More people are starting to get employed but the expenses of life haven't necessarily changed," says Ross. "And we've seen families come in that we've not seen before in the past and that's because they're just trying to make ends meet."
The Salvation Army has Spanish and Russian translators available to assist county residents who don't speak English and more information is available at 211. The charity hopes to reach 5,000 county residents this winter.
The California Highway Patrol, Sacramento County Sheriff's office and Elk Grove police department are teaming up with the non-profit. Saturday, Oct. 29, is the last day to apply.
"With this mass sign-up approach, we're hoping to serve the community better," says Ross. "Because there's working families that may not be able to get there during the week and so a Saturday's open and then at these various locations all over the Sacramento County area."
To apply for food assistance, people must present proof of identification and a Sacramento county address. Ross says they do not need to have a green card to be eligible. Seniors citizens and people with disabilities who cannot sign up in person may call the Salvation Army to make other arrangements.
