Levee On Lost Slough In Danger Of Failing

UPDATE: Sacramento County says crews have provided a temporary solution to the leakage at the Lost Slough levee.

People who live in the area and evacuated are being encouraged to stay out of the area until Friday. An evacuation center is open at Laguna Town Hall on 3020 Renwick Avenue in west Elk Grove.

Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for the southern part of Sacramento County. The Weather Service says a levee on Lost Slough is in danger of failing and could flood Twin Cities Road and Lambert Road just off of Interstate 5.  

Water spilling over the confluence of the Mokelumne and Cosumness Rivers flooded one area of south Sacramento near Franklin and Hood Franklin Roads..

The water started running over Point Pleasant Road in the early morning hours.

Jose Vargas had enough time to get his family and his animals out, but not much else.

"At least we got out of it in time," he says. "Everybody's fine. I get the horses out this morning, I got my dogs, and everybody else.  Everything else is secondary, you know."

He says his house had about three feet of water in it.

Two houses down, Kevin Spraggins has sandbags around his home.

"It (the water) is underneath the house already. The shop's flooded. I think if it's done, it should just recede right now, but if it comes, it's gonna come," he said.
