Leading California Democrats are mounting yet another show of resistance to President-elect Trump and congressional Republicans. This time, they're pushing back against vows to de-fund Planned Parenthood.
“Defunding Planned Parenthood is not a women’s rights issue, it is a human rights issue,” Senate leader Kevin de León told a “pink-out” rally on the Capitol steps Tuesday, at which many lawmakers sported pink scarves and pink boxing gloves. He was joined by the speaker of the Assembly and Governor Brown’s chief of staff, as well as actress Lena Dunham.
Among the crowd of hundreds was Yolanda Sanchez of Sacramento. She says she’s been looking for ways to express herself since the election, and liked what she heard at the rally.
“We’re not going to go away,“ Sanchez said. “And just how it worked for the Tea Party, I think it’s going to work for us too. But we got to stay strong, and we can’t give up, and we can’t get tired.”
The Senate and Assembly later passed non-binding resolutions opposing any efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.
“It needs to be made clear and public that Planned Parenthood is more than just an abortion clinic,“ said Cheryl Qualset of Sacramento. “Planned Parenthood provides health care and all kinds of things that are essential for people who
can’t get them.”
Several Republican lawmakers criticized the resolutions as premature or wrongheaded.
