Union Pacific Says Rail Line Near Elk Grove Could Re-Open

The rail company says its crews are working to clear two more train cars off the track so they can re-build the track structure and then replace the track. Union Pacific says the rail line could re-open tomorrow but the timing is still "fluid."

The derailment sent 22 cars tumbling into the Cosumnes River last week. The next step will be to bring equipment in to remove the train cars along the damaged stretch of track.

The cause of the derailment is still unknown, although Union Pacific says flooding was likely a related factor. The box cars were transporting food products. The company is still dealing with service disruptions and outages around the northern California region.
