The movement to connect more people in low-income areas of Sacramento with locally-grown produce took a step forward Wednesday.
The first family to take advantage of a new law allowing home farm stands filed a permit with Sacramento County.
This will allow Yisrael Urban Family Farm to sell their own produce, honey and eggs, right at their home.
Katie Valenzuela Garcia is with the Sacramento Urban Agriculture Coalition.
She says this move is a great start, but more will need to be done to make urban farm stands as prolific as farmers markets.
"Farming isn't a huge economic boon for folks,” Garcia says. “It's really hard work, and it's hard work to earn not a ton of money. So, if we want to see urban agriculture solve our food access issues, we will need to see some level of investment and facilitation on behalf of local government."
The Yisrael Family Farm started in South Oak Park back in 2007.
