The owner of the soon-to-be-shuttered Rubicon Brewing Company says there's a beer bubble in the Sacramento area, and it's bursting.
Glynn Phillips says his business, the oldest brewery in Sacramento, is one example of that.
He says competition has grown tremendously in recent years.
Phillips says the decision to open the brewery's West Sacramento production facility back in 2012 created a negative cash flow situation.
"We did it at a time when it was the busiest year that the Rubicon's ever had and there were not nearly as many breweries," Phillips says. "And so, we really wanted to expand out into the world and be able to produce more, and it just - we never really hit the numbers that we needed to hit in order to make all of that work."
Phillips says there's still a glimmer of hope for the Rubicon Brewery because there are a lot of people who would like for it to remain open. But, he says, his time as an owner will soon be over.
The company recently shipped more of its signature Monkey Knife Fight beer to local retailers.
Beer at the Midtown location is expected to remain on tap through the end of the month, when the brewery is scheduled to shut its doors.
