Conservatives mounting a campaign to repeal California’s new gas tax are getting a financial boost that could help them qualify the initiative for next November’s ballot.
San Diego businessman and Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox announced Wednesday he’ll put some of his personal fortune into the campaign.
A six-figure contribution, Cox says – though he won’t get more specific. That’s probably not enough on its own to gather the 365,000 valid voter signatures required to put the measure on the ballot. But it’s significant, because the business groups that often bankroll Republican candidates and causes support the gas tax – in fact, they’ve even urged initiative backers to stand down. So backers need all the financial help they can get – and this gives them a running start.
The other prominent Republican running for governor, Orange County Assemblyman Travis Allen, is the initiative’s official proponent.
The gas and diesel taxes kick on Nov. 1.
