Plans are underway for an eight-story apartment and retail project at the corner of 7th and L streets in downtown Sacramento - the former site of a Greyhound bus station.

Apartments, Retail Planned For Old Greyhound Station

The former Greyhound bus station in downtown Sacramento has sat mostly vacant for the past seven years. But the Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the site could finally see new life soon.

"The owners of the property are finalizing plans for an eight-story project at the northeast corner of 7th and L streets," says Sorich. "It would include 58 apartment units with parking and ground-floor retail space."

The owners are expected to file a formal application soon. The apartments would be "Class A," which are considered to be luxury units. Greyhound left the site in 2011 and moved to its terminal on Richards Boulevard. The property is now used for paid parking.

Ettore's Files For Bankruptcy Protection

Ettore's has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The well-known Sacramento area bakery and cafe has been in business for 30-years. The company has two restaurants and a production facility. All will stay open during its reorganization of debt. Sorich says last year Ettore's opened a Roseville location in addition to its site on Fair Oaks Boulevard.

"It seems the expansion was a big factor in the Chapter 11 filing," says Sorich. "Apparently, the company's day-to-day operations are profitable, but it's still trying to make up for the large contracts and loans that came with expanding."

The company employs more than 190 people, and says the Chapter 11 filing won't impact staffing.

New Casino Planned For Old Shepherders Inn Site

There's a plan to put a casino in a restaurant site that's been around for a long time in Rancho Cordova. The building — on Folsom Boulevard near Sunrise Avenue — is well-known for its river-rock pillars. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says it was previously the Sheepherders Inn, and most recently operated as Fire Rock Grill.

"Now, a business called Magnolia House Casino is planned at the site," says Sorich. "It would include a restaurant and gaming floor in separate parts of the building. The restaurant could open by June, and the casino opening is contingent on approvals. A restaurateur is behind the project."

The restaurateur hopes the casino will attract more customers than just a restaurant alone. Analysts say this is a strategy they've seen at other places in the Sacramento area. It's become common to combine traditional poker card rooms with flashier new restaurants.
