More mosquitoes are testing positive for West Nile Virus in parts of Elk Grove and south Sacramento. And that's prompted two nights of aerial spraying, beginning Monday.
Airplanes will spray a fine mist of an insecticide called Trumpet EC over sections of Elk Grove, the Pocket Neighborhood and neighborhoods south of Fruitridge Road.
The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District says about two dozen mosquito samples collected within those areas have tested positive for West Nile. The district says Trumpet EC is registered with the EPA and only affects mosquitoes and insects smaller than mosquitoes.
The district has posted a map of where the spraying will take place.
So far this year, 142 mosquito samples and 67 dead birds have tested positive for West Nile in Sacramento County. Most people infected by the virus have no signs or symptoms. About 20 percent could have flu-like symptoms. And one percent may develop an infection that affects their neurological system.
The spraying over about 41,000 acres is scheduled to take place between 8 p.m. and midnight Monday and Tuesday night.
