Watch Sacramento’s Hobo Johnson On NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ (Spoiler: There’s Scones)

  •  Nick Miller
Wednesday, September 12, 2018 | Sacramento, CA

The endearing, fitful and explosively popular Sacramento band Hobo Johnson and the Lovemakers is returning to a hometown stage on Wednesday night — but not before the release of a special NPR All Songs Considered four-song live performance.

The set, which was recorded as part of NPR’s popular Tiny Desk Concert series, also includes a special gift: Host Bob Boilen gifted Hobo Johnson frontman Frank Lopes a basket of homemade peach scones, a nod to the group’s viral single.

Hobo Johnson and the Lovemaker’s popularity surged this year, in part due to said virality of “Peach Scones,” the group’s submission to NPR Music’s annual Tiny Desk Contest, which received millions of views on YouTube and Facebook.

The band will play its first local show in months on Wednesday night at Harlow’s — which appears to be a shorter, opening-act performance to celebrate the music released on the Creation District record label, of which Hobo Johnson is involved. Several artists from the label will perform at the show.

Hobo Johnson went on a multidate tour of North America and Europe this summer, which sold out nearly all dates, and will embark on a massive, two-month, 30-plus show U.S. tour in October.

The band is scheduled to finish its year in Australia on a festival tour with acts such as Migos, Interpol and CHVRCHES.
