Current City Council Member Jay Schenirer has represented the area since 2010, but he’s retiring from elected office.

District 5 includes Oak Park, Hollywood Park and Parkway.

Before redistricting, it also included Curtis Park, one of the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods. Many neighborhoods in the district — and specifically the historically Black Oak Park neighborhood — are seeing longtime residents displaced through gentrification, rising housing costs, and the recent pandemic-induced influx of Bay Area residents.

As the representative for District 5, the council member votes on city policies, ordinances and land uses. The member also weighs in on Sacramento’s budget and contracts.

The council member serves on committees covering topics like transportation and additionally gets a say in hiring the city manager, city attorney, city treasurer and city clerk. The term lasts for four years.

Voters in District 5 can choose from two candidates who advanced from the June primary:

Caity Maple

Caity Maple

A co-founder of Sacramento Solidarity of Unhoused People (SOUP), a homeless mutual aid nonprofit. Maple, 31, does government consulting and lives in Oak Park.

Maple spent years working as a legislative analyst for progressive nonprofits and later the cannabis industry.

Tamiko Heim

Tamiko Heim

A 20-year state worker who has served as the District 5 representative on the city’s Active Transportation Commission since 2019. Heim, 43, lives in North City Farms.

Heim used to volunteer for the Black Child Legacy Campaign, which works to reduce deaths of African American children in Sacramento.
