In 1764, Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart traveled to London, performing and making professional connections. Wolfgang was 8. Much is made of his relationship with Johann Cristian Bach, as Mozart put it, “He is the father, we are the children.” At that time Bach was putting together subscription concerts with Carl Friedrich Abel, whom the Mozarts also met. We know this because, many years later a symphony was found among Wolfgang’s works dated to about that time and it was declared an early symphony of his. No. 3. Only it wasn’t. While in London, Mozart had copied out a symphony of Abel’s to study. Opus 7 No 6. The only difference between the two was that Mozart had substituted Clarinets for Oboes. Once someone noticed it was no longer “Mozart’s Third”. We have symphonies from both composers this morning. Mozart’s no. 36 and Abel’s Opus 7 No. 5.
