The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami ura) by Hokusai.
Since childhood Claude Debussy had a fascination with the sea. For his “three symphonic sketches” collectively titled “La Mer” [The Sea], he took inspiration from literature and art including the iconic woodblock print from about 1830 by Japanese artist Hokusai, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” which Debussy requested to be printed on the cover of his published music. Hear Debussy’s impressionistic evocation of different times of day at sea, the play of the waves, and the interaction of the wind and waves in “La Mer,” today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00pm on CapRadio Music.
