Lara Downes's new album For Love of You will be released on the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann. The recording isn't just about the composer and pianist’s bicentennial, but also how she and her husband Robert Schumann truly needed each other in order to accomplish enormous feats.

The new release contains music by both Robert and Clara composed in the years leading up to their marriage. Downes explains that much of this music came from a dramatic and turbulent time in their relationship.

“If you read the letters between the two of them over the span of three years leading up to their marriage, they are fighting for many things,” Downes says. “They’re fighting to be together. She’s also fighting for herself, she’s fighting for her independence and her future as an artist.”

Downes also explains that she’s always been inspired by Clara’s determination and fortitude.

“When you’re a little girl who’s having dreams of becoming a musician and looking for some female role models,” she says, “you find Clara Schumann and you find her first. She has this legendary appeal for any young woman who is serious about the life of a pianist.”

For a sneak peek into the new album, tune into CapRadio throughout the week or check out the track on Spotify. The full album will be released on Sept. 13.
