Classical pianist Lara Downes collaborated with several of her friends and musical heroes to create “For Lenny,” an album dedicated to the 100th birthday of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein. The record features guest artists like opera baritone Thomas Hampson, bluegrass artist Rhiannon Giddens and Pentatonix beatboxer Kevin Olusola. She recorded Bernstein originals, new works dedicated to him, and a series of podcasts and videos documenting the process of creating the project.

Downes stopped by the Insight studio to chat with Beth Ruyak about the legacy of Bernstein and perform his songs “Story of My Life,” “Big Stuff” and “Some Other Time.”

Downes will host the Winners Concert for the 13th annual Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition in Davis on April 29, 2018.
