One of Sacramento’s best-attended free arts festivals is also a fundraiser, and it’s turning 25 this year. The Chalk It Up! Festival takes places this weekend at Sacramento’s Fremont Park. In the past, more than 200 volunteer artists, sponsored by local businesses and individuals, have created chalk art on the sidewalks surrounding the park. The three-day event – which also features performances by a variety of local bands - raises money for grants programs to fund youth arts education programs in all disciplines in local schools and in the community through the sponsorship of sidewalk squares. We’ll talk with executive director Jerry Perry about the event, what it does and who it helps. And we’ll hear some music from bands scheduled to perform.
