SUNMONKS made their first appearance on Insight in 2014 with their debut E.P. “In A Desert of Plenty.” They returned this year with new music from their full-length follow up “Two Play.” Last week SUNMONKS released a new single and new video for the title track, featuring their trademark visual style and sense of humor.

Geoffrey C.K. and Alexandra Steele came to the Cap Radio Garden this summer to record three music videos including "Two Play." They spoke with Beth Ruyak on Insight to talk about the new record and how they define their sound.

“Genre-hopping is what we call it,” says Geoffrey C.K. “I think somebody called it ‘Avant Pop,’ which I really liked. That term lends itself to outsider art, which is very much what we are. None of our family is involved in entertainment or that world. We’re definitely outsiders.”

“I like to call it experimental pop,” says Alexandra Steele. When it came time to name the band, she says, “We made a giant list of names, and kept going over them, talking to our friends about it. ‘What weirds you out, what bugs you? What sticks in your head?’ And then … SUNMONKS.”

“SUNMONKS was the one that people kept going back to,” says Geoffrey C.K. “We almost called ourselves Slight Piper, and Swarm Horse. A lot of the same vowels over two different syllables.”

You can listen to an extended version of this segment featuring a live performance of the new single "Two Play" below.
