The Sacramento Theatre Company presents the world premiere of “When We Were Colored” by Ginger Rutland. The play is adapted from a book by Eva Rutland, mother of Ginger Rutland, about moving from the Jim Crow south to Sacramento just after World War II. Listen to Insight's interview with Eva Rutland from 2007 here.

The Rutlands were the first black family on their block and first black children in their school.

Playwright Ginger Rutland and actress Brooklynn Solomon (playing the role of “Ginger”)  join Insight to discuss adapting the book for the stage and its relevance to today. Ginger Rutland’s “When We Were Colored” runs at the Sacramento Theatre Company through April 28, 2019.
