When San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Morgan Cook began to dig into California Congressman Duncan Hunter’s campaign spending, she didn’t realize where her investigation would go. Where it led was to the Congressman pleading guilty to misusing hundreds of thousands of dollars of campaign funds. But not initially, as Hunter began his defense by pleading not guilty.

The story of Cook unraveling what Hunter had done is one of excellent detective work, dogged persistence and knowing where to look. Prosecutors often say to follow the money, and Cook did. Her work also led the FBI to look into what she was uncovering. Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California, Phillip Halperin, credits Cook with leading federal authorities to prosecuting Hunter.
