As January began, it seemed the focus would be on a new year, a new decade, an impeachment trial and a long presidential campaign. But all of that changed Thursday night in the United States, Friday in Iraq, when the United States initiated a drone strike that killed Iran’s top military commander, Qassem Soleimani. 

Reactions around the world, and in the United States, have varied widely. But one thing is certain: With Iran promising retaliation and President Trump promising to respond in kind, there’s no way to predict what will happen next and at what scale. 

This turn of events has virtually pushed both President Trump’s impending impeachment trial and the 2020 presidential campaign off the front pages. Political Junkie Ken Rudin delves into how the rapidly changing situation in the Middle East could affect the trajectory of Campaign 2020.
