California has many new laws on the books for 2020. Some of the notable ones are also complex. They address payday loans, private prisons and the status of independent contractors. AB5, the law dealing with those contractors, has attracted national attention, had lawsuits threatened, exemptions granted and has a possible forthcoming ballot measure.

While new laws are taking effect, the new legislative session is also underway. We dig into new laws and preview some of what lawmakers are working on now, including homelessness, wildfire prevention, power shut offs and PG&E’s bankruptcy.
