StoryCorps In Sacramento

 

StoryCorps, the national organization dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing stories from a variety of Americans came to Sacramento in the fall of 2015, sponsored by the Sacramento Public Library and the Sacramento Public Library Foundation.

More than 120 interviews were recorded in the StoryCorps mobile recording booth during its 2015 stop in Sacramento.

Every Tuesday during Morning Edition and All Things Considered from Nov. 24th through Dec. 29 we featured some of these stories in a special series called "StoryCorps in Sacramento."

From the time she was a little girl in Guatemala watching her grandma care for others, Belinda Tillson DeLeon dreamed of becoming a nurse. But her dream was nearly cut short when she was thrust into the medical world not as a nurse, but as a patient.

StoryCorps: Pioneering Spirit Drove Distinguished Educator

December 22, 2015

Dr. Hazel Mahone started teaching in West Virginia shortly after the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education court decision declaring school segregation unconstitutional. Later she became Sacramento County's first African-American female superintendent.

Kenny and Brian are best friends who met while serving life sentences at California State Prison, Solano. They had thought the only way “lifers” got out was by getting shot or stabbed to death, or by a drug overdose. But they found another way out.

Kiyo Sato was a 19-year-old student attending Sacramento City College when, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, she and other Japanese Americans were forced out of their homes and into internment camps.

Folsom resident Darina Hul Kellom is a social worker who often helps veterans dealing with PTSD and other effects of war. But she's been dealing with those effects in her own life for as long as she can remember.
